Shoewallet.com Featured in Shape Magazine, Tools & Tips for Outdoor Workout Safety Your neighborhood may seem safe when you're out running, walking or biking, but accidents happen. "A number of our trauma patients are injured while just walking across a street," says Carolyn Sachs, M.D., of the University of California, Los Angeles, Emergency Medical Center. "It's helpful if you have information on you that tells us about any medical conditions, allergies and the medications you're taking." Sachs suggests also carrying a driver's license and phone numbers for your physician and an emergency contact person.
Better yet, get the Shoewallet ($10; 800-618-4630, shoewallet.com), a lightweight pouch with room for keys, cash and an ID that attaches to your shoelaces and fastens with a Velcro strap. For an additional $4, you'll get a laminated ID card with your emergency contact and medical information. Another device, MyVoice ID (from $30; 866-667-5768, myvoiceid.org), is a clip-on gadget about the size of a pager that allows you to record about 60-80 words. It's a high-tech way for you to detail any vital information about yourself and what instructions you'd like followed in case of emergency.
Carrying a cellphone is another sensible idea. For easy transport, check out the Hold-a-Phone ($20; 617-424-7673, jaminnov.com), which has an adjustable wristband and a compartment that can accommodate virtually any cellphone up to 5 inches long. And you can use the phone while it's in the holder.
To avoid other problem situations, the Road Runners Club of America, rrca.org, offers this advice:
* Don't wear headphones--you won't be able to hear someone or something approaching.
* Trust your intuition when you're in unfamiliar territory--if the situation doesn't feel right, leave.
* Inform your friends and family about your usual running schedule and routes or write them down somewhere before you leave the house to work out alone.
